ULM computer science students compete in programming contest
The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Computer Science Department—in partnership with Praeses software development and services company—recently held its annual ACM/IEEE programming contest on ULM’s campus.
Eighteen ULM computer science majors competed in the three-hour competition.
Dr. Jose Cordova, ULM faculty chair of computer science, said, “Students are given a set of problems to solve using the Java computer programming language. The objective is to solve the most problems in the least amount of time.”
Prizes donated by Praeses were awarded to the top three in each division. The top three contestants in the senior division were Lauren Chandler from Bossier City; Kyle McVay from Colfax; and James Newton from Monroe.
The top three students in the junior division were Walter Allen from Monroe; Sam Butler from Baton Rouge; and Jon Gorman from Pioneer.
Additional prizes were given to the first person to solve a problem in each division.
In the senior division, Chris Flowers from West Monroe solved a problem in five minutes.
In the junior division, Keith Black of Bastrop solved a problem in 34 minutes.
Before the contest, representatives from Praeses spoke to the students regarding internship and job opportunities at the Shreveport company.
“We are committed to continuing our support of area universities and the high caliber students graduating from the various computer science programs,” stated Rebecca Morgan, manager of talent acquisition and communications at Praeses.
“These young people are incredibly bright and we want to continue offering career opportunities in the area they know best – their home region.”
