KEDM at ULM wins eight Louisiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association awards

KEDM Public Radio 90.3 FM, housed at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, earned eight awards for their 2012 news coverage.

The awards were presented during the annual Louisiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association (LAPBA) banquet in Baton Rouge.

KEDM Interim General Manager Jay Curtis explained KEDM's significance and the awards.

“KEDM has always worked to serve our community with high quality local news coverage,” he said.

“We’re proud of the depth and breadth of the work done over the past year, examining issues that are important to everyone who lives in our area. I'm so pleased to see that work recognized by the AP.”

KEDM’s News and Public Affairs Director Bob Lenox took home awards across six categories, including top honors in Breaking Weather and Public Affairs for coverage during Hurricane Isaac.

Lenox also won a Best Feature award for highlighting a local veteran, and Best Sound for his profile of local musician Rod Allen Payne.

Lenox won two more first-place awards in General News and Spot News for his stories on a business accelerator project and the proposed Neville High School charter transition.

Lenox expressed his appreciation, stating, “It’s a special honor to be recognized by the association with these awards. We look forward in continuing to cover issues and events that shape our community.” 

John Hughes, a former KEDM education reporter, received the prestigious Story of the Year award for his report on public funds going toward promotional materials for the state’s voucher program.

Hughes also received a first place award in the In-Depth Series category for his piece regarding the actions school districts are taking on the issue of bullying.

KEDM is a nonprofit public radio station licensed to ULM—a part of the University of Louisiana System—broadcasting a line-up of in-depth news, classical music, and jazz along with special entertainment programs from studios located on ULM’s campus.
