ULM & LDCC encourage community to participate in MLK Day of Service; collections begin Jan. 14

The University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana Delta Community College invite the community to participate in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Community members, students, faculty, and employees from LDCC and ULM are asked to deliver donated items to Stubbs Hall Rooms 123 or 246 on the ULM campus during the week of Jan. 14-18.

On Monday, Jan. 21, the items will be organized and delivered to the Community Soup Kitchen, located at 219 Plum St. in Monroe, on the observed Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

The goal is to assist the United League of Churches Organization and stock the Community Soup Kitchen with essential items.

“All that we give to others we give to ourselves,” said Dr. Pamela Higgins-Saulsberry, head of the ULM Social Work Department, and chair of the ULM Diversity Committee.

“This is what the MLK Day of Service exemplifies. Anyone who takes the opportunity to participate in this act of kindness will not only assist the Community Soup Kitchen in providing food and goods to those in Monroe who are in need, but will benefit by being part of an effort that makes Monroe a better place for everyone who lives here, works here, and is educated here. One act of kindness has a rippling effect, so an effort like this floods the community with goodwill. It benefits everyone.”

The Community Soup Kitchen serves hot meals three days a week to the homeless, seniors who live alone and cannot cook, and those who have a disability or are physically challenged. The kitchen also provides clothing and food bags.

There are two ways to participate.

Items listed below can be donated and delivered to Stubbs Hall, Rooms 123 or 246 at ULM.

Participants may also come to Stubbs Hall, Room 246, at 10 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 21, and assist in the packaging and delivering of the collected items.

Below are items sought for the Community Soup Kitchen:

Food Items: canned soups, macaroni & cheese, Vienna sausage, ramen noodles, canned tuna, canned salmon, chili, oatmeal, potted meat, pudding, spam, Jell-O, peanut butter, crackers, fruit cups, dried fruit, bottled water, and fruit juices;
