ULM announces high school Technology Challenge winners

The University of Louisiana at Monroe has announced the winners of the seventh annual Louisiana High School Online Technology Challenge held on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

The purpose of the competition is to demonstrate how teams of students can use technology creatively for productive life-long learning.

Thirty-three high school teams totaling nearly 500 high school students across the state participated in this year's event.

Through a generous sponsorship from CenturyLink, the challenge was done at no cost for the participants.

"As far as I know, I believe that this type of online statewide educational competition is unique in the United States," said Dr. Mike Beutner, associate professor of Instructional Technology and organizer of the challenge.

Nine judges from CenturyLink joined over 20 judges from ULM. The judges examined and evaluated the work of the participating teams.

Since 2006, approximately 4,300 high school students from 100 Louisiana high schools have participated in this annual online event held during regular school hours in high school computer labs across Louisiana.

The challenge seeks to encourage student learning with technology by promoting enthusiastic support for more active involvement of students in applied learning opportunities.

Challenge organizers want to enhance learning at high schools in Louisiana by instilling a passion for learning through teamwork, actively recognizing and sharing excellent student work, celebrating outstanding student achievement, and promoting community, school, and business partnerships that support learning with technology.

Each team was composed of up to 15 students under the guidance of each school's designated team coach.

On the morning of the competition, during regular school hours, each team met at a reserved computer lab at their high school to collaboratively compete in the challenge.

Each team will receive a trophy.

The 2013 winners are as follows:

First Place: Louisiana New Tech at Plain Dealing in Bossier Parish. Team Coach: Barbara Curry.

Second Place: Carencro High School in Lafayette Parish. Team Coach: Donna Denny.

Third Place: Hahnville High School in St. Charles Parish. Team Coach: Patricia Chevalier.

Fourth Place: Berwick High School in St. Mary Parish. Team Coach: Pam Daigle.

Fifth Place: Pineville High School in Rapides Parish. Team Coach: Kathy Bennett.

The 2014 Technology Challenge will be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014.
