ULM and Strauss Theater present "The Sound of Music: The Concert" Aug. 2-4
The University of Louisiana at Monroe and Strauss Theater Center will present "The Sound of Music: The Concert" in ULM's Brown Auditorium during three shows, Aug. 2-4.
The show begins at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 2-3, and at 2 p.m., Aug. 4.
Tickets can be purchased at the Strauss Theater Box Office by calling 318-323-6681 or at ULM's Brown Auditorium Box Office on the day of the show.
Prices are $20 for adults and $10 for students.
ULM Assistant Professor Dr. Lynn Clark joins the cast as the Mother Abess and ULM Director of Bands, Dr. Jason Rinehart will conduct the Strauss Orchestra and ULM sophomore music major Nathanael Medlin is cast as Rolf Gruber.
Jon Baccarini, of Strauss Theater, is the director.
Director of ULM's School of Visual and Performing Arts, Dr. Derle Long, says there will be something for all audiences to enjoy.
"The thing I like most about the Strauss Theater production of 'The Sound of Music' is that it is a concert version of the music with no scenery, some costuming, but mostly an emphasis on the wonderful music from that classic work," he said.
"When you choose to stage a work like that, you run the risk of being constantly compared to the classic movie version starring Julie Andrews. What you do to fix that is find remarkable musicians to fill the roles and let them use their talents and creativity to make the parts their own. Jon Baccarini has done that, assembling a wonderful cast that will present their unique version of some of the most popular songs ever heard from a musical. Then you get Jason Rinehart to assemble a world class pit orchestra of the finest instrumentalists in the area. The result is a concert version of 'The Sound of Music' that people are going to want to see more than once."
