ULM Dental Hygiene professor presents in Seattle
Kim Whorton, assistant professor Dental Hygiene at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, presented a poster at the American Dental Educator's Meeting in Seattle, Wash., in March.
"We are so very proud of Kim for being selected and representing ULM at this national meeting for dental and dental hygiene educators," said Beverly Jarrell, head of ULM's Dental Hygiene program.
Whorton's poster, "Transferring Teaching Strategies from the Classroom to Service-Learning Projects," was selected to be part of the annual session.
"This presentation represents my findings from examining and comparing which teaching strategies used in class were actually transferred to the service-learning communities that students served during their practicum," Whorton said.
She continued, "The overall goal of the project was to expand the research about service learning as a teaching methodology. Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich learning experiences, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities."

There are also three operatories at Riser Elementary and Middle School, and three in the mobile dental hygiene unit.
More than 2,000 patients receive dental hygiene care in ULM's three clinics.
Supervised by faculty who are licensed dental hygienists, students provide teeth cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants, oral cancer screenings, patient education, and nutritional information.
