ULM Music Department presents operas Oct. 18 and Oct. 21

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Department of Music is hosting the Louisiana Music Teachers Association State Conference in October, and in honor of the occasion, the department is presenting a rare performance of Carlisle Floyd’s first opera, “Slow Dusk.” 

“Slow Dusk” will be performed at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

The one-act opera, written by Floyd in 1949, will feature ULM faculty members; soprano, Dr. Claire Vangelisti, associate professor of music, and mezzo-soprano, Dr. Lynn Clark, assistant professor in curriculum and instruction. Dr. Richard Seiler, professor of music at ULM, will provide piano accompaniment. Guest artists baritone Ron Ulen, and tenor, Jos Milton, join the cast.

Ulen, who sang the title role in the Friends of Opera production at ULM last June, sang leading roles in Germany for almost 20 years.

He is a voice professor at the University of Texas-San Marcos.  Milton is a professor at The University of Mississippi in Oxford, and sang professionally in New York for many years.

The production, set in the South, will be directed by ULM Head of Opera Dr. Mark Ross Clark. 

At 3 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 21, Ron Ulen returns to the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall stage for an Opera Gala, presented by Friends of Opera.

Dr. Claire Vangelisti will be featured in this concert, as well as tenor Bray Wilkins, who also sang a leading role in “Rigoletto,” at ULM in June 2012. 

ULM voice students will also be featured. This event is free and open to the public.
