ULM named one of nation’s most military friendly schools

The University of Louisiana at Monroe is one of the most accommodating institutions for active military members who are pursuing higher education, according to G.I. Jobs’ 2013 list of military friendly schools.

Military friendly schools are the top 15 percent of schools nationwide that deliver the “best experience for military students.”

ULM is highlighted as a Service members Opportunity Colleges Consortium member (SOC); a university that offers an ROTC program; an institution with the availability of academic credit for military service; and a university with full-time veteran counselors or advisors on staff.

Dr. Eric Pani, ULM vice president for academic affairs, expressed his pride in this recent distinction.

“Our veterans have served this country in an important and a selfless manner, so I am proud that ULM can provide them with credit for their experience and training and access to degree programs that will benefit them.  It is also gratifying to get confirmation from an external agency that our support services are helpful to veterans. As Veterans Day approaches and we seek to honor our service men and women, it strikes me as especially timely that ULM has been awarded this designation.”

Of the 14 Louisiana institutions listed, ULM is the only institution that offers five degree choices, including certificates, associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.

G.I. Jobs chooses universities based on a set of criteria that include the presence of on campus non-financial military support, academic credibility, the availability of academic credit for military service, percentage of military students to total enrollment, flexibility, veteran graduation rates, and tuition assistance.

G.I. Jobs produced the list from a selection of colleges, universities, and trade/vocational schools, representing the top 15 percent of schools that embrace the military community and ensure student success on campus.
