ULM’s Berry presents at national conference

Dr. Christine Berry, director of the Small Business Risk Management Institute and associate professor of risk management and Insurance at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, delivered two presentations at the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) National meeting in Alabama, Nov. 14-15.

NCOIL is an organization of state legislators whose main area of public policy concern is insurance legislation and regulation.

Many legislators active in NCOIL either chair or are members of the committees responsible for insurance legislation in their respective state houses across the country.

“Dr. Berry’s work has resulted in an impressive national reputation in the field of insurance and risk management,” said Dr. Eric Pani, vice president for academic affairs at ULM.

“Students majoring in that program have greatly benefited from her knowledge, experience, and quality teaching, so it is not surprising that they have been awarded internships with leading companies worldwide, and have a very high employment rate following graduation.”

Berry’s presentation, titled “Flood Insurance:  What Happens after a Disaster and Where do States Fit in?” provided an overview of the national flood insurance program.

At the request of the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, Berry also delivered a presentation on the basic principles of risk management and insurance to a group of legislators in attendance.

The Griffith Foundation promotes the study and teaching of risk management and insurance, supports college and university RMI programs nationwide, provides risk management and insurance education programs for K-12 students, and offers basic principles seminars and workshops for public policymakers.

In addition, Berry has been invited to deliver a presentation for the Insurance Information Institute at their 2013 National Hurricane Institute.

The Insurance Information Institute is a leading national organization whose focus is on improving the public’s understanding of the benefits of insurance.
