ULM Hawkeye captures seven awards at state conference
The University of Louisiana at Monroe's student newspaper, the Hawkeye, won seven awards in the Louisiana Press Association's Better Student Newspaper competition. The 132nd annual LPA Convention was held in Marksville.
In addition to seminars and workshops, attendees from 77 newspapers from around the state were treated to a luncheon with former Governor Edwin Edwards serving as guest speaker.
"Our students worked very hard this year with a specific goal to create the best student newspaper in the state," said Christopher Mapp, director of Student Publications and an assistant professor in mass communication. "To have their journalistic achievements recognized by industry professionals like the LPA helps validate their efforts."
Awards are as follows:
Srdjan Marjanovic, a senior art major from Belgrade, Serbia, dominated the sports photography division, winning first, second and third place awards.
Cole Avery, a senior mass communication major from Jonesboro, won second place for best sports story, as well as third place for best column.
Deron Talley, a senior mass communication major, from Folsom, won third place for best sports story.
Lane Davis, a senior art major from Ringold, won second place in the best advertising staff member category.
