ULM history student curates Biedenharn exhibit
Melinda Dewberry, a University of Louisiana at Monroe master's candidate in history and an intern at the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens in Monroe, recently set up an exhibit featuring ancient artifacts of the Dumas Collection of Mediterranean antiquities.
This long-term exhibit, which has no end date in sight, includes 10 ancient oil lamps that represent a history of the main types of lamps used in the ancient Mediterranean over many centuries.
Many decorated and inscribed Christian lamps are represented, with photos and general information about size and type. A catalog "I Am the Light of the World" is available for those who want to know more about this topic.
The descriptions in the catalogue are based upon the work of Dr. Joe D. Seeger of the Cobb Institute of Archaeology, who evaluated the lamps in 1993.
Dr. Monica Bontty of the ULM History Department wrote an introduction to the lamp catalog and edited it with help from Bryan Butler, Karen Niemla and Keli Jacobi.
The exhibit and the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens may be visited on Tuesdays – Fridays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
There is a $4 charge for visitors under the age of 11; for those 12 and older, the charge is $6.
