ULM to host 2012 Region III Social Studies Fair March 8

On Thursday, March 8, the University of Louisiana at Monroe will host the 2012 Region III Social Studies Fair in Fant-Ewing Coliseum, making it the 46th consecutive year that ULM has hosted the fair.

The fair is a joint project between the ULM College of Education and Human Development and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The co-directors are Dr. Jerrilene Washington, of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. John Sutherlin, of the Department of Gerontology, Sociology and Political Science.

Rachel Deas, of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, serves as a graduate assistant.

Local school fair winners from grades four-12, from all schools in nine Northeast Louisiana parishes and Monroe City Schools, are invited to participate.

Individual and group awards are given to winners in each of the following seven areas: anthropology, economics, geography, history, Louisiana history, political science, and sociology.

Competition is divided into age groups: division I – grades four-five; division II – grades six-eight; and division III – grades nine-12.

Students enter projects relating to Louisiana industries, such as agriculture, banking, forest products, insurance, and tourism among other intriguing topics.

More than 650 students participated in the 2011 Regional Fair, along with their parents and teachers.

The public is invited to view the projects from 12:30-1:30 p.m., attend the awards ceremony from 1:30-2:30 p.m., and patronize the participating community-spirited sponsors.
