Hawkeye staff shines at conference

Students from the University of Louisiana at Monroe Hawkeye staff competed in the Southeastern Journalism Conference at the University of Tennessee-Martin walking away with five top-10 finishes.

The conference hosted 26 schools from 11 different states in the region.

According to Christopher Mapp, assistant professor of mass communication and director of student publications, the impressive showing reflected the quality of work and the character of the students.

"These awards recognize the excellence and ability of our students at ULM," said Mapp. "This is proof that the Hawkeye staff is doing outstanding work that can compete with any of its peers in any category."

ULM competed and won against some of the region's most prestigious journalism programs, such as the University of Alabama, the University of Mississippi and Union University.

Hawkeye staff members took away five awards earning them great praise among their peers and advisors.

"Student Publications draws on the talents of students from different departments – not just mass communication," Mapp continued.

"Two of our students who won awards are art majors. Putting together a product like Ôthe Hawkeye' requires multiple skill-sets, and we are proud that the paper serves as a showcase for all of these creative contributions."

Award winners are as follows:

Srdjan Marjanovic, a senior fine arts major from Belgrade, Serbia: 2nd place -- best graphic design and 4th place -- best photography

DeRon Talley, a senior Mass Communication major from Folsom: 2nd place -- best on-site sports reporting

Cole Avery, a junior Mass Communication major from Jonesboro: 3rd place -- best news reporter

Kelsey Hargrove, a senior art major from Monroe: 9th place -- best newspaper editorial artist/cartoonist
