ULM Fishing Team scores win at recent competition; ranked second in nation

It's not easy being second in the nation, but the University of Louisiana at Monroe Fishing Team handles the responsibility with characteristic dedication, prepared to continue their climb to the top after their latest conference win.

ULM students and Fishing Team members Paul Clark and Brett Preuett, both of Monroe, secured five bass and placed third to win a prize of $1,000 on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the National Guard FLW College Fishing South Conference event on Lake Amistad in Del Rio, Texas.

The ULM team is ranked second nationally in Collegiate Bass. Their latest triumph paves the way for advancement to the Collegiate Bass National Championship on Lake Pickwick in Georgia and the FLW National Championship on Lake Murray in South Carolina.

National Guard FLW College Fishing is reportedly the industry's premier tournament-fishing organization and offers anglers of all skill levels the opportunity to compete for millions in prize money nationwide in 2012 over the course of 191 tournaments across five tournament circuits, each providing an avenue to the sport's richest payday and most coveted championship trophy – the Forrest Wood Cup.

All participants must be registered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their college or university.

ULM Fishing Team Senior Advisor Larry Ellerman and Co-advisor Dan Chason expressed their pride in the team's commitment.

"One tournament requires preparation, practice and repeated visits to be successful," Chason said. "This adds up to roughly $1,000 per member per tournament, which is paid out of their pockets. They even purchase their own team jerseys to represent ULM."

"Our team is a self-sufficient Recognized Student Organization at ULM, but we will be raising funds for the future competitions," said Ellerman.

"The National Championships for FLW and Collegiate Bass will require travel, lodging, gas, and expenses for the team. Most times, these guys sleep four-eight deep in a room and travel many miles in their personal vehicles/boats."
