ULM pharmacy professor consults in South Africa

Dr. Roy C. Parish, professor of Clinical & Administrative Sciences, and Scott Endowed Chair for Clinical Pharmacy Research in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Shreveport Campus, spent over two weeks in Grahamstown, South Africa as a visiting professor.

Parish visited Rhodes University last summer.

He was invited to observe their new Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program, share some of ULM’s experiences, and make professional recommendations. 

“While there, I visited Dora Nginza Hospital and Provincial Hospital in Port Elizabeth, and Frere Hospital in East London,” said Parish. 

“At Frere, I was invited to attend a meeting of the East London Hospital Complex Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and was asked to take part in a discussion involving ethical considerations in the drug therapy of a patient in Frere Hospital.  I also visited an indigent clinic in Grahamstown.”

Parish was also invited to the annual meeting of the South Africa Society of Clinical Pharmacists, where he delivered the keynote speech and led a discussion panel.

“I met many descendants of the Dutch and English settlers and met many of the native Africans, the Xosa people, learned a few words of Afrikaans and a few of Xosa,” said Parish.

“My last day there was spent in a game park, Pumba, where I photographed anything that moved.”

Parish also visited Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth, East London, Port Alfred, Kenton-on-Sea, Bathurst, and King William’s Town.
