ULM Pharmacy professor receives prestigious Bowl of Hygeia Award

Dr. Roxie Stewart, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, was awarded the nationally recognized Bowl of Hygeia award at the Louisiana Pharmacists Association's Annual Conference.

The Bowl of Hygeia award, which depicts the national symbol for pharmacy, has been associated with the pharmacy profession since 1958, and is considered the most prestigious award in the field.

According to the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, “the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities, and encourages pharmacists to take active roles in their communities.

Of the prestigious honor, Stewart said, "I am extremely honored to have received this award. I have had some great mentors in my career who have shown me the importance of giving back to the profession and to the community.  Like many pharmacists, I love our profession and love helping others. To have been recognized and nominated by my peers for something that many pharmacists do on a daily basis is truly humbling.”

Dr. Benny Blaylock, dean of the College of Pharmacy, commended Stewart for her excellence.

“Dr. Stewart is most deserving of this honor,” he said. “She is an outstanding member of the College of Pharmacy faculty and serves as a mentor, and a professional and personal example to our students. She played an important role during Hurricane Katrina with the strategic national stockpile for therapeutic drug relocation and dispensing. Currently, she serves as the president of the Louisiana Society of Health System Pharmacists. The College of Pharmacy is very proud of Dr. Stewart's academic and service accomplishments and her recognition with the Bowl of Hygeia award for the state of Louisiana.”

The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacy associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

In addition to service through their local, state, and national pharmacy associations, award recipients devote their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.
