ULM dental hygiene program expands to Wisconsin
Since 1972, more than 800 dental hygiene professionals have been expertly trained at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Now, thanks to a new articulation agreement with Northcentral Technical College in Wisconsin, ULM's dental hygiene program will expand its reach even more.
The new partnership allows students to complete an online Bachelor of Science Degree in two years at ULM after completing an associate degree in Dental Hygiene at Northcentral Technical College in Wisconsin.
ULM President Nick Bruno said, "I commend College of Health Sciences Dean Dr. Denny Ryman, who initiated the effort to seek this quality partnership. Not only will these kinds of collaborations be sought within our state, but also nationally and internationally."
NTC is also proud of this partnership, said Suzi Mathias, director of Transfer & Placement.
"Northcentral Technical College is proud to partner with ULM to provide an opportunity for graduates from our Dental Hygienist associate degree program to complete their bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene. The fact that the two-year degree earned at Northcentral Technical College transfers in full to ULM means that our graduates can complete their bachelor's degree in just two more years. The online class options make degree completion a reality."
Recognizing the need for more dental hygienists to provide improved oral health care in rural communities in northeast Louisiana, Beverly Jarrell first developed and implemented ULM's dental hygiene program 40 years ago. She still heads up the department today.
Of this new initiative Jarrell said, “We are very pleased to be able to offer this program to hygienists who are interested in furthering their education and pursuing this curriculum without moving from their present locations. Our program will provide graduates with many additional opportunities in the field such as the ability to pursue additional degrees, teach in dental hygiene programs and take part in research."
In addition to this articulation agreement, ULM has established several others, including agreements with Louisiana Delta Community College in 2008, Dallas Community College District in 2009, Bossier Parish Community College in 2010, South Arkansas Community College in 2010, and an agreement with Hinds Community College in 2010.
ULM will continue to explore 2+2 initiatives with other two-year colleges.
