About the Artists
For his performance of the title role with the New York premiere of Dominic Argento’s opera Christopher Sly with The Center for Contemporary Opera, Shawn Roy was hailed by the New York Times: “The performance was worth hearing for the work of Shawn Roy in the title role.”
The New York Magazine also reviewed, “Shawn Roy romped energetically through the title role without forgetting to make music with his robust baritone.”
Shawn Roy has appeared with many opera companies across the United States and abroad, namely, The New York City Opera National Company, Arizona Opera, Tulsa Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Cleveland Opera, Virginia Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Utah Opera, West Norwegian Opera as well as toured in France, Belgium, Spain, and Switzerland.
For his performance as Dulcamara with the National Symphony of Bolivia, Roy was reviewed as, “Shawn Roy was fabulous, with a beautiful bass voice, bearing theatrical scope, and his stage presence was extraordinary, making him the favorite of the audience.”
Roy is also a teacher of note, with students winning awards at the state and regional levels. His work as a stage director include productions of Carmen, The Barber of Seville, The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Too Many Sopranos, Hansel and Gretel, The Medium, The Mikado, and Drood.
An active recitalist, Chan Kiat Lim has performed in the United States, Asia, and Europe, including solo recitals in Italy, Romania, Malaysia, and at Steinway Hall, New York City.
Lim has also appeared as soloist with orchestras playing Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto and Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion.
Praised for his tone, color, and artistry, Lim is the winner of several competitions and has worked with esteemed artists and pedagogues such as Dorothy Delay, Masao Kawasaki, James Miltenberger, Peter Oundjian, Sandra Rivers, and James Tocco.
Lim’s interest and research in twentieth-century music–particularly by American composers–have resulted in invitations for presentations, master classes, and recitals at national and international levels.
Lim is also the co-author of the online multimedia resource eNovativePiano. His students have won top prizes and awards at regional, national, and international piano competitions.
The duo has performed concerts nationally. Both Roy and Lim are alumni of the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati where Roy received his Master’s and Artist Diploma in Opera, and Lim received his Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance.
The performers are both faculty members of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette School of Music and Performing Arts.
They have consistently programmed music by twentieth-century American composers in each recital since their inception as a duo in 2005.
In the very near future, the duo will release a CD recorded by Centaur Records entitled: An American Kaleidoscope - Through the Lenses of William Bolcom, John Duke, Thomas Pasatieri, and Ned Rorem.
