ULM College of Health Sciences to help Race for the Cure Sept. 24
The University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Health Sciences will participate in the 2011 Komen NELA Race for the Cure Saturday, Sept. 24 at Forsythe Park.
The COHS team is composed of students, staff and faculty from the college's departments - each one has a representative that encourages the people in their area to attend, donate and participate.
"In the past eight years (since 2003), the College of Health Sciences has won the 'Largest College/School Team award,' and last year we also won an award for highest amount donated," said Jaclyn Verret Peters, assistant professor of radiologic technology and team captain.
"Nursing students have helped out by educating people at the race about self-assessment and breast screenings," she continued.
"The students from Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Science, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Speech-Language Pathology departments have participated in large numbers in past years to help the college have a large team and represent ULM well."
Peters stated her team would also decorate the campus where the COHS departments are housed the week of Sept. 12 - 16.
"Everything will be decked out in pink for the upcoming race and to raise awareness for breast cancer research," she said.
The ULM RADT Student Organization will donate $425 to Komen Race for the Cure; the money was raised through sponsorships for philanthropic projects throughout the academic year.
The organization will walk in honor of Emily Williamson, director of the ULM Child Development Center and an instructor for the Curriculum and Instruction Department.
