ULM's Sutherlin speaks at national social science conference
Dr. John W. Sutherlin, associate professor in political science at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, presented a paper at the National Social Science Association annual conference in New Orleans Oct. 10.
The paper, entitled "Women's Rights in the Middle East as a Precursor for Revolution" is an expansion of an earlier effort that Sutherlin presented at the Global Studies Association conference in Chicago.
"This paper began months ago during the 'Arab Spring' that has led to so many political changes in the Middle East and North African states," Sutherlin explained.
"As these revolutions have continued, and existing regimes have responded, it has been women's organizations coupled with ethnic and religious minorities that press for more change."
Sutherlin plans to submit his paper to a national journal by the end of the year.
