ULM's Sylvester to present on cancer research at prestigious scientific meeting in Japan
The University of Louisiana at Monroe's Dr. Paul W. Sylvester will present a talk and co-chair a section at the upcoming annual meeting of the International Society for Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods in Sapporo, Japan, Nov. 14-17.
Sylvester, the Pfizer Endowed Professor of Pharmacology and director of Graduate Studies and Research in the ULM College of Pharmacy, will speak on the topic "Vitamin E Isomers Display Differential Therapeutic Efficacy."
The conference welcomes scientists from academia, industry and government to report on the latest advancements in nutraceutical and afunctional foods and their application in product development.
Sylvester's research examines the relationship between nutrition and breast cancer growth and development, with an emphasis on intracellular second messenger signal transduction pathways involved in regulating tumor cell growth and viability.
His laboratory is currently examining the mechanisms mediating the antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects of various forms of vitamin E on breast cancer cells.
Sylvester is active as a reviewer of submitted manuscripts for numerous professional journals, including Cancer Research, Nutrition and Cancer and Carcinogenesis.
He has maintained continuous extramural funding for his research over the past 18 years and has received research grants from various institutions including the National Cancer Institute, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and American Institute for Cancer Research.
