ULM Division of Music faculty to present at national conferences

University of Louisiana at Monroe Division of Music faculty members Dr. James Boldin and Dr. Scot Humes will present clinics at two major music conferences in December 2011 and February 2012.

Boldin will present a clinic titled "Stopped and Muted Horn: A Guide for Directors" at the 65th Annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago on Dec. 16.

"Stopped horn is an extremely effective but sometimes misunderstood technique required of the French horn," Boldin explained.

"Passages for stopped horn occur in nearly every genre of music, from solos and chamber music to large ensembles such as orchestra and wind band. This clinic will present some practical methods for helping horn players learn this technique."

The Midwest Clinic is the world's largest instrumental music education conference and attracts approximately 15,000 attendees annually.

Humes will present his clinic titled "Take Twelve Steps to a Better Clarinet Section" at the Texas Music Educators Association 2012 Clinic/Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

This convention is scheduled for Feb. 8-11, and the clinic offers simple solutions and concepts that can make a dramatic difference in clarinet section sound and technique.

Humes will approach common ailments from the stance of an applied clarinet teacher through practical and effective methods for the development of a unified clarinet section.

TMEA is the largest music educators association in the United States, with over 10,000 school music educator members.

The annual TMEA Clinic/Convention draws attendees from all over the country and features workshops for band, orchestra, vocal, elementary, and college educators, as well as concerts by the finest musicians.
