ULM student receives scholarship to study in Mexico
University of Louisiana at Monroe Sociology and Spanish major Austin Wise has been awarded a scholarship by Sigma Delta Pi, the national Spanish Honor Society to study for a month in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Sigma Delta Pi awards twenty-nine scholarships each year to its members to study abroad in Mexico, Spain, Ecuador, and Costa Rica.
Wise is one of ten recipients nationally to receive the scholarship, which will cover the cost of registration, tuition, room and meals for a four-week course of study at The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies.
Wise has been a member of Sigma Delta Pi since 2010, and has been an active participant in a number of its activities, including the Festival of World Languages in April.
Wise also participated in the ULM study abroad program in Costa Rica in 2009.
Dr. Ruth E. Smith, advisor of the Lambda Sigma Chapter, was one of those who recommended Austin for the scholarship.
"Austin has made significant progress in his Spanish studies," she said. "Our Department is very excited for him to be able to take part in these courses in Mexico."
Wise's first major is sociology, and he was selected the Outstanding Student in that field for 2010-2011. He hopes to continue his graduate studies at Florida State University in the fall.
