ULM Spanish student recognized by national Spanish Honor Society

Matthew Street of Monroe, president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe's chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, received the prestigious Gabriela Mistral Award for his academic achievements and outstanding chapter involvement.

The award is reserved for outstanding graduate or undergraduate students of Spanish who are active members of Sigma Delta Pi, and is granted by Sigma Delta Pi's national Executive Committee.

The award may be presented to only one person per chapter.

Dr. Ruth Smith, head of the Department of Foreign Languages, spoke very highly of Street.

"Matt has been a very diligent student," she said. "He applies himself because he wants to learn, not just to make good grades, and he has been an exemplary leader and model for others."

Street was nominated because of his performance in his classes and for his contributions to departmental and chapter activities.

Street has been the 2010-2011 president of Sigma Delta Pi and has been very active in presentations at area high schools, assisting with the Festival of World Languages and the Celebration of Humanities and Sciences.

In addition, he has acted as translator for two mission trips to Mexico for area churches and businesses.

Street was also chosen as the Outstanding Senior in Spanish by the Spanish faculty and will be attending the University of South Carolina in the fall after receiving an assistantship to pursue his masters in Spanish.
