McCann earns Outstanding Dissertation Award in Virginia

Assistant Professor Brandy McCann, a recent addition to the University of Louisiana at Monroe gerontology faculty, was recognized at the Virginia Tech University Graduate Awards Banquet on Thursday, March 24, in Blacksburg, Va.

McCann attended the banquet as the recipient of one of two Outstanding Dissertation Awards given during the 11th Annual Graduate Education Week.

Her dissertation, "Intimacy and Family Among Single, Working-Class Women: A Focus on Rural Appalachia," was named a winner in the Outstanding Dissertation in the Social Sciences, Business and Humanities category.

The awards committee noted the originality of McCann's research and the contribution made to the scientific community, as well as the preparation of the final document.

"I am deeply honored by the recognition," said McCann. "I feel humbled and am especially grateful for the women who shared their stories, and for all the support I received from my committee, family, and friends."

As an award recipient, McCann received a plaque and a check for $1,000 from the Virginia Tech Alumni Association.
