ULM student to study and teach in France

Kirby Buttitta, an English major, French minor and spring 2011 graduate of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, has received a scholarship to become a teaching assistant in Rennes, Brittany.

The program, Escadrille Louisiana, is funded primarily by the French government and is used to prepare immersion teachers to teach French in Louisiana.

Buttitta and ten other participants will study for several weeks at Centenary College before leaving for the Université de Rheims where they will continue their study of French and foreign language pedagogy while teaching for seven months at the elementary, middle, or high school level.

Buttitta participated in the ULM program in Montpelier in the summer of 2010, which inspired her to seek a means of returning as soon as possible.

"The experience in Montpellier showed me the differences between French and American culture," she said. "I am thankful to have so many opportunities to experience new cultures and meet people just like me."

When Buttitta returns in the summer of 2012, she will continue her studies at Centenary and graduate with a teaching degree.
