ULM expands online offerings with new master's degree in history

The University of Louisiana at Monroe has added a Master of Arts in History to its numerous online offerings.

The coursework is offered through ULM's GOLD program, Gateway to OnLine Degrees, and comes on the heels of the rollout of the bachelor's in history online degree last October.

The Master of Arts in History is a non-thesis track that offers a 30-hour online graduate curriculum to provide the student valuable knowledge base applicable in law, politics, and citizenship.
"We are expanding opportunities to study history at the graduate level to greater numbers of students, including those living outside the United States," said Dr. Ralph Brown, history department head.

"So it made sense to expand our current online undergraduate program to include those graduate-level students who will have a number of career options open to them following graduation."

Brown said a master's degree in history provides a solid foundation for college-level teaching, or for jobs in business or government writing, research and preservation work with archival documents in libraries and museums.

"There are a variety of opportunities for history graduates," agreed Robyn Jordan, coordinator of accelerated learning at ULM. "People are often surprised at the many types of businesses that recruit history majors because of the analytical skills the students have honed."

The master's program prerequisites include a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 18 semester hours of social sciences and 18 semester hours of history. No less than one-half of the graduate program of study must be taken in history courses restricted to graduate students only.

In addition to the university requirements for admission to ULM's Graduate School, all applicants for regular admission to the Master of Arts in History degree program must meet the following criteria:

• A minimum combined score of 900 on the GRE General Test (Verbal plus Quantitative)
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 (based on a 4.0 scale)
• Minimum formula score of 1875 (GPA X GRE)

Applicants who fail to meet the above standards may be admitted on conditional status as recommended by the Graduate History Admission and Curriculum Committee in concert with the Dean of the Graduate School.
