Symphonic Band featured in ULM concert March 4
The ULM Band Department will present a concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 4, in Brown Auditorium.
The program will feature the Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Jason Rinehart, and the Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Derle R. Long. Guest conductor will be Thomas Ruby, a Masters in Music Education candidate.
There is no admission charge for the concert.
The Symphonic Band will perform several works by composers Frank Erickson, Ed Huckeby and Ralph Hermann. They will also perform "Cajun Folk Songs" by Monroe native Frank Ticheli, who will be featured in the ULM Composer-In-Residence series in 2012.
The Wind Ensemble will perform works by Paul Dukas, Robert Russell Bennett, William Schuman, and John Philip Sousa.
Bennett is best known as an arranger of Broadway shows and film scores, including the movie version of Oklahoma.
Sousa's "Riders for the Flag" was composed in 1927 and dedicated to the officers and men of the Fourth U.S. Cavalry. The bugle call in the trio of the march reflect the patriotism which Sousa felt throughout his lifetime.
