French honor society inducts ULM students

The ULM chapter of Pi Delta Phi French Honor Society initiated eight new members in a special ceremony held in the University House on Friday, Dec. 2.

Founded in 1906, the national organization's mission is to recognize outstanding academic achievement and to promote interest in the French language and Francophone cultures. Initiates must have studied French on the advanced level and earned top grades in all course work.

ULM's chapter, Mu Chi, has welcomed new members annually since its inauguration in 2000.

Chapter Moderator Dr. Chris Michaelides opened this year's initiation ceremony.

Dr. Fredrick Adams presented information on the history and mission of Pi Delta Phi.

Next on the program were readings in French presented by ULM students Theodore Brode from West Monroe; Loretta Collins from Monroe; Catherine Olson from Bossier City; and Hillary Morgan from Sterlington.

These were followed by a talk given by Dr. Charles Holloway, ULM professor of foreign languages, on the theme of language learning both as a practical necessity in today's global economy and as a personally enriching lifelong process.

The program concluded with a symbolic candle-lighting ceremony and the formal induction of new Pi Delta Phi members, each of whom received an official certificate and pin.

ULM students initiated into the chapter were: Anton Dudko from Kiev, Ukraine; Timothy Derek Hardy from Monroe; Caitlin Herrock from Monroe; Victoria Miller from Monroe; Crystal Raye Murphy from West Monroe; Catherine Olson from Bossier City; Delia Valerio from Metairie; and Jennifer Watkins from Bush.
