ULM students participate in annual school supply drive

University of Louisiana at Monroe Accounting Instructor Patti Roshto and students in her Summer II accounting course found out that addition by subtraction is a winning equation.

In early August, 20 students from Roshto's ACCT 2013 class gave a little of their own time and money in order to purchase supplies for the Ouachita Valley Federal Credit Union annual school supply drive.

For their efforts, the class was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the credit union.

"I was honored and appreciative of her willingness to help us come together as a class and support such a great cause," said Cathi Kendrick, a senior accounting major from West Monroe.

"Ouachita Valley has been doing the school supply drive for seven years now, and every year we help more and more kids go back to school."

Kendrick said the drive provides disadvantaged children all the necessary supplies they need to start the academic year off on the right foot.

"These are supplies that they otherwise might not have," said Kendrick. "This year's goal was to collect enough supplies to help 1,000, mostly elementary, children, return to school.

We gave the ULM students a couple of weeks to bring in school supplies and the turnout exceeded our expectations. Everyone came together and really made a difference."

Some of the donated supplies included paper, folders, pencils, crayons and glue – enough to send about 25 children back to school with ample gear to make a great start academically.

"I was pleased at the quantity because I think it's a worthwhile project in which we were glad to be able to participate," said Roshto.
