ULM's National Student Employment Week celebrates student workers
Acknowledging the dedication and importance of student workers at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the ULM Office of Career Connections and Experiential Education celebrated National Student Employment Week
from April 11-15.
The highlight was the campus-wide Student Employee Appreciation Reception on Tuesday, April 12, which featured visits from Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo and ULM President Nick J. Bruno, who signed the official proclamation designating ULM National Student Employment Week.
"Our student workers provide an indispensable service to the university on a daily basis," said Dr. Bruno. "And even though we designate one week in April to show them how much they are appreciated, we want our student workers to know the appreciation lasts all year long."
President Bruno recognized the winners of two Student Employment Awards during the packed celebration.
Awards were given to Ruslan Hemed, a senior business administration major from Monroe, for Student Employee of the Year and the ULM Child Development Center for Student Employee Team of the Year.
"I truly am honored," said Hemed. "The event was well organized and well received by student workers across our campus. It is very important to workers to feel so appreciated in this way."
"The reception really made me feel special," said Sherise Hickman, a senior kinesiology major from Monroe and one of the student workers who won a gift basket door prize from Belle Fleur. "It's nice to know that someone realizes your hard work and appreciates you for what you are trying to accomplish."
"Student workers play such a vital role on our campus," said ULM Student Employment Administrator Roslynn Pogue, who coordinated the second annual event. "Without them, we simply could not operate our campus as successfully as we do. It is only right for us to express our gratitude by celebrating these special students during National Student Employment Week."
"I was so impressed with the entire event and honored to be included," concluded Mayor Mayo (B.B.A., '79). "Even more impressive was the size of the crowd and how many came out in support of the event. I'm looking forward to seeing it grow even more in the years ahead."
