ULM hosts "Traveling Scholars" series during academic year; first speaker presentation Nov.2

The University of Louisiana at Monroe will host Drs. Wendy Atkins-Sayre and Aysel Morin as part of its "Traveling Scholars" series, sponsored by the Speech and Debate Forum of the Department of Communication at ULM.

Atkins-Sayre will present a lecture at 6 p.m., Nov. 2, in Stubbs Hall, room 100. The lecture is titled "Articulating Identity: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Animal/Human Divide."

Atkins-Sayre is an assistant professor of communication studies and director of the Speaking Center at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Her research interests focus on identity as constructed through discourse with an emphasis on social movement rhetoric and feminist criticism. Atkins-Sayre's research has also appeared in Women & Language.

Morin, November's second speaker is an assistant professor in the School of Communication at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

Her research areas include rhetoric, culture, political discourse, intercultural communication, nationalism and social movements.

Her most recent publication appears in Louisiana Communication Journal Volume 12, 2010.

Morin's presentation "Feminists, Orientalists and Fundamentalists: A Triangle of Feminisms in Muslim Cultures" will be held at 6 p.m., Nov. 9, also in Stubbs Hall, room 100. The Traveling Scholars series will continue in February and March 2011.
