Highway Commission recognizes work of ULM Police Department and ULMPD officer
The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission recently recognized the work of the University of Louisiana at Monroe Police Department and one of its officers with dual awards in Baton Rouge.
Corporal Jackson Brackett was recognized along with other law enforcement officers from across Louisiana at the Second Annual LHSC awards luncheon at the Crowne Plaza. The awards recognized outstanding officers for continued efforts to remove impaired drivers from state highways.
Brackett was honored with a commemorative plaque/shadow box medal display for his exemplary enforcement of driving while impaired laws. He was recognized as the top enforcement officer employed by a university police agency in Louisiana.
ULM Chief of Police Larry Ellerman accepted a plaque distinguishing the ULMPD as the top university department in Louisiana for its enforcement of driving while impaired laws.
Chief Ellerman, who accompanied Brackett to the awards ceremony, expressed his pride in the public service performed by Brackett and other officers at ULMPD.
“Our goal is to keep our university community safe by removing impaired drivers who may kill someone through a crash or other means,” he said. “Having seasoned professional officers like Corporal Brackett on our staff promotes a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors at ULM.”
Chief Ellerman recognized the contribution by the Louisiana State Police’s Applied Technology for the implementation of ULMPD’s Intoxilyzer 5000 machine, which is instrumental in providing a safe and convenient environment for testing of impaired drivers. The facility is located at ULM and is accessible not only to ULMPD, but to any area law enforcement agency for testing.
Each year impaired driving kills more than 400 people in Louisiana and is a contributing factor in almost half of the traffic crashes and in the commission of other crimes, according to state highway commissioners.
