ULM co-hosts Louisiana College Goal Sunday; Feb. 21

The University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana Delta Community College has the answer for students and their families navigating the financial aid application process for college.

Louisiana College Goal Sunday is a free event designed to help students and their families complete the application process in one afternoon. It will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 21, on the Eastgate Campus of Delta Community College, located at 3158 Louisville Ave.

Financial aid professionals will be on hand to guide students and their parents through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, also known as FAFSA, which is required for college or high school seniors needing financial aid assistance. Computer labs will be open so that electronic FAFSA forms can be completed and submitted on site.

The Louisiana Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance sponsors the event with funding from a Lumina Foundation for Education Grant. For more information, call 318-342-3745.

It is a good idea to bring the following items to the event:

• Social security number of student and, if applicable, parent. Driver's license (if any).

• Federal Student Aid Personal Identification Number (PIN) if applied for and received prior to the event

• If applicable, proof of U.S. permanent resident or other non-citizen
• Records of earnings, including W-2 Forms for 2009

• Student and spouses (if married) 2009 signed Federal Income Tax Return - IRS Form 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040Telfile Foreign Tax Return or tax return from Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, The U.S. Virgin Islands, The Marshall Islands or the Federated States of Micronesia

• Parent's 2009 signed Federal Income Tax Return, if a dependent student)

• Untaxed income records for 2009 - Social Security temporary assistance to needy families, welfare, or veterans benefits records

• Current bank statements (checking, savings, other)

• Current business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stock, bond, and other investment records

If the student answers "No" to ALL of the questions below, then that student is considered dependent and must provide parental information.

• Are you 24 years of age or older?

• Are you married?

• At the beginning of the school year, will you be working on a master's or doctorate program (such as an MA, MBA, MD, JD, PhD, EdD, or graduate certificate, etc.)?

• Are you serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training?

• Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?

• Do you have children who will receive more than half of their support from you during the academic year?

• Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through the end of the academic year?

• At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court?

• Are you, or were you an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?

• Are you, or were you in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?

• At any time on or after July of the previous year, did your high school or school district homeless liaison determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?

• At any time on or after July of the previous year, did the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?

• At any time on or after July of the previous year, did the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?
