ULM to host second in “Traveling Scholars” series April 20

The University of Louisiana at Monroe will host Dr. Adrienne Viramontes as part of the “Traveling Scholars” series, sponsored by the Department of Communication and the Speech and Debate Forum, from 6-8 p.m. on April 20 in Stubbs Hall, Room 100.

Viramontes is an assistant professor of communication and co-director of the women’s and gender studies program at University of Wisconsin, Parkside in Kenosha, Wis., where she teaches a variety of undergraduate courses that range from communication and popular culture to communication methods.

Viramontes will present a lecture titled “The Contributions and Complications of Researching Identity: Answering the questions ‘So What?’ and ‘Who Cares?’” which will focus on being the subject of one’s own research. She will discuss the benefits and complications of conducting such research in the context of personal and professional/academic realms.

Her research interests focus on the study of Midwestern Chicana and Chicano identity constitution as it intersects race, ethnicity, class, gender and industry. She draws from personal experiences to understand how the personal and the political relate to, influence and are influenced by the larger social context.

Her first book, “On Becoming Chicana in the Midwest,” was published in 2008. She is currently working on a book about women’s lived experience with fluid sexuality.

Viramontes is the second of three “traveling scholars” to participate in this semester’s series. Communication faculty member Dr. Lesli Pace is responsible for creating and coordinating the speaking events.
