ULM Summer Reading book chosen by committee

Officials at the University of Louisiana at Monroe announced this year’s selection for the 2010 Summer Reading Program.

A committee of representatives from the five colleges, the Library, and the Student Success Center chose This I Believe, edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman as this year’s book.

The book is a compilation of the work of 80 essayists who speak to such profound life questions as what core values and beliefs guide our lives, what is important, and what continues to inspire individuals every day. This I Believe is filled with thought-provoking essays on compassion, freedom, generosity, war, democracy, and kindness, encouraging readers to pause and think about what they believe.

Dr. Sandra Hill and the English Department have again agreed to use the book in freshman English classes. University Seminar students will participate in activities related to the selection as well.

“We look forward to working with everyone as we continue to build our students’ first shared intellectual experience,” said ULM’s Director of Retention Barbara Michaelides. “We hope to share ideas with each other as we incorporate this year’s choice into our fall semester.”

The Summer Reading Program is a collection of events surrounding a common theme to introduce students to the ULM learning community.

Students are encouraged to read the selected book over the summer as their first university assignment. The program is intended to provide students with their first common intellectual experience, an introduction to the university's academic life and a sense of unity among students, faculty, staff and the community.
