ULM Museum takes next step toward accreditation

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Museum of Natural History recently hosted a visit from a Museum Assessment Program surveyor for the American Association of Museums.

Dr. Charles McReynolds, director of the Treehaven Environmental Learning Center at University of Wisconsin Steven's Point, visited the campus as part of a three-year assessment leading to possible accreditation of ULM's Museum of Natural History.

“Dr. McReynolds expressed his appreciation for the beauty of our campus and the quality of our museum,” said ULM Biological Sciences Instructor Dennis Bell. “He met with several university administrators, the members of the Museum Advisory Board, and Dr. Mike Zambie, president of our ‘Friends’ group while on campus.”

McReynolds’ assessment provides vital information on best practices for museums learned over several years as a MAP surveyor, and will help ULM’s Natural History Museum improve its facility, exhibits, and programs.

“We encourage everyone to visit the Museum of Natural History if you haven't seen it. It's ULM's best kept secret!” said Bell.

The museum is located on the third floor of Sandel Hall, above the ULM Bookstore. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month

For more information contact Dennis Bell at 318-342-1802 or bell@ulm.edu or visit the museum's Web site at www.ulm.edu/mnh.
