ULM joins local educators in celebration Tuesday

Progressive teaching methods at the University of Louisiana at Monroe were celebrated today at the CenturyLink Accent on Excellence Breakfast, held at the Monroe Civic Center.

The Monroe Chamber of Commerce's annual event celebrates local educators; today's honorees were recognized for their innovations in student learning.

Dr. Jeffrey Cass, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was recognized for his college's work in redesigning college algebra and English composition courses. The college recently opened the Mathematics Resource Center and the Write Place to support these revamped courses. Cass also led the development of ULM's Quality Enhancement Plan, designed to improve student learning through the redesign of core curriculum courses.

Barbara Michaelides, director of the Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center, was honored for her leadership in service learning. Her staff collaborated with freshmen on service learning projects that benefit the region and the state. This year, students raised funds and awareness for the Ouachita Council on Aging.

Brenda Allen, director of Career Connections and Experiential Education, was recognized for ULM's increase in student internship opportunities. Her staff has placed university students with the Late Show with David Letterman, Intermediaries and Reinsurance Underwriters Association in New York City, and at companies such as Southwest Airlines in Dallas and Fox News in Houston.

Several teachers were also honored at Tuesday's event.
