ULM senior new summer intern for Louisiana congressman

Jasmyne Pugh, a senior political science major at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, landed a summer internship with U.S. Congressman Rodney Alexander (R-La.).

The 21-year-old from Mobile, Ala., described herself as “blessed” for having the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C., this summer, though she noted that political science was the furthest thing from her mind when she first came to ULM a few years ago. She took an introductory political science class to fulfill course requirements, not realizing how compelling the course would be.

“I remember thinking, politics . . . yuck! But after the first day in Dr. Sutherlin's Political Science 101, I was hooked!” she said.

Pugh said additional political science courses completely altered her views on the subject and she soon switched to political science as her major. Pugh has even interned before with Louisiana State Rep. Rosalind D. Jones (D-Monroe). Assistant Professor Joshua Stockley was one of those influential teachers at ULM who demonstrated the allure of politics.

“By interning for Congressman Alexander in Washington D.C., Jasmyne has an exciting opportunity to see how Congress really operates and develop career plans for after graduation,” he said. “I have no doubts that she will do a great job and represent ULM well.”

“Who would have ever thought that a person with a dislike for politics would develop a deep passion for it and earn . . . an internship with Congressman Rodney Alexander?” said Pugh.
