ULM atmospheric science faculty awarded one of only six Unidata grants

Assistant Professors Anne T. Case Hanks and Boniface Mills recently received a $14,000 Unidata Equipment Award for Department of Geosciences purchases at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Their proposal, “Weather Research Laboratory Expansion,” enables the purchase of computers for the atmospheric sciences department. The computers will run programs such as the Integrated Data Viewer and McIDaS, assisting ULM students in becoming better forecasters as they learn atmospheric processes on the equipment.

ULM is one of only six U.S universities to receive the award for the 2009 calendar year.

In addition, the grant funding will update the department’s website and produce weather maps and forecasts for the regional area. The two faculty members expect to begin work on the project in summer 2009.

Unidata is a community of over 160 institutions whose goal is sharing data, and tools to access and visualize that data. The primary purpose of the award is to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and for existing members to continue their active participation.

The program is affiliated with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, a hub for research, education, and public outreach for the atmospheric and earth system science community.
