ULM atmospheric science students selected for national internships

Five University of Louisiana at Monroe atmospheric science students were recently selected to participate in paid internships through the National Weather Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

These students represent the largest group of students accepted by the NWS and NOAA as Student Career Experience Program interns in the 30-year history of the atmospheric science program, according to Boniface Mills, assistant professor of atmospheric sciences.

The students, their hometowns and their stations are as follows:

• Courtney Legendre, Destrehan, NWS in Slidell-New Orleans

• Matthew Clay, Destrehan, NWS in Lake Charles

• Caitlyn Olivier, Arnaudville, NWS in Lake Charles

• Tamarr Purdom, Slidell, NWS in Slidell-New Orleans

• Jeffrey Hood, Mabelvale, Ark., NWS in Little Rock, Ark.

Upon completion of the required work hours and graduation, the students may be offered a full-time, career-conditional position within the NWS on a non-competitive bid basis.

Currently, Lara Keys and Jessica Talley are participating in the SCEP program at the NWS in Shreveport. Donald Jones, a graduating senior of the atmospheric science program, is finishing the SCEP program at the NWS Slidell-New Orleans and is expecting information soon about where he will be employed within the NWS southern region.

In addition, Brody Bourque has been selected for the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). Bourque will be working at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), with all travel expenses and lodging paid by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Global Change Education Program.

SURE allows an undergraduate student to conduct supervised research with a faculty mentor. Students receive training in the research methods applicable to their research plan, analyze their data and create written and oral presentations of their results. At the end of the summer, each participant takes part in a formal research symposium.
