ULM pharmacy students make big showing at La. Academy of Sciences

Basic pharmaceutical science students in the University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Pharmacy captured all three top spots in a poster competition at a recent Louisiana Academy of Sciences meeting.

The meeting, held at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, resulted in first, second and third-place awards for the three ULM pharmacy students.

Gauri Patwardhan of Mumbai, India, working under advisor Dr. Yong-Yu Liu, took first place and a $150 award. Second place went to Gautam Bedalala of Hyderabad, India, who earned $100 under advisor Dr. Victor Hsia, while third place went to Vikram Wali of Kashmir, India, who earned a $50 award under advisor Dr. Paul Sylvester.

"I am very proud that our graduate students' research is held in such high regard within the state,” said Department Head Dr. Karen Briski of the basic pharmaceutical science department at ULM.

Briski said all COP students are exceptionally devoted to their work and graduate program faculty are confident the students are well prepared to advance knowledge in the pharmaceutical sciences and improve patient care.

Added Briski, “It is gratifying to see that their quality efforts are recognized and appreciated by our sister institutions in Louisiana.”

Among the stated goals of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences is to bring scientists in the state together to encourage research and education, as well as to publish scientific material.
