Regional Job Search Skills Workshop March 25 at ULM addresses job seeker’s needs

Whether the economic downturn has sent you scrambling for work for the first time in years, or you just want to polish your resume and interview skills, career professionals at the University of Louisiana at Monroe are here to help.

The ULM Office of Career Connections invites the public to attend a free Regional Job Search Skills Workshop on Wednesday, March 25, on the first floor of Malone Stadium. The event will run from 4 to 7 p.m., but participants are free to come for as much or as little of the session as needed.

“We felt this would be a good opportunity to show that ULM is integrally connected to the community and truly wants to help people who are in need of our services,” said Ann Bloxom Smith, director of the ULM Office of Academic Internships at the Center for Career Connections.

Dynamic speakers from various areas of business will lead informational workshops, said Smith, beginning with a 4 p.m. presentation by author Sarah Fuller.

Fuller will speak on networking in a small-to-medium-sized city. Fuller wrote the book “Job Searches Beyond the Big Cities,” and is aware of how few publications specifically deal with job searches in those markets. Her work has been featured in such respected business publications as Forbes.com, in the article "Can a Small Town Help Your Career?"

Several copies of Fuller’s book and other items will be available as door prizes.

At 5 p.m., M’Kay Bonner of Bonner Solutions and Services will hold a workshop on the psychology of job searches. The licensed industrial organizational psychologist, based in West Monroe, will provide information on the delicate balance that exists between personal characteristics, personal preferences, and the best career and work environment for an individual.

At 6 p.m., Counselor Steve Kelly of the ULM Community Counseling Center will offer a workshop featuring useful tools for coping with job loss. The Center’s goal is to provide clients the opportunity to learn, change, and develop through personal growth experiences.

Representatives with the Career Connections office will also hold workshops on “Resume Preparation” and “Job Interview Skills.” Participants are invited to bring two copies of their resume so career professionals can review it and make suggestions

Information about other community resources available through ULM, such as the services offered by the dental hygiene clinic, counseling center, and marriage and family therapy will also be available. Handouts regarding job search skills and state and local services will be available, as well.
