Alpha Lambda Delta receives award for outstanding chapter in U.S.
For the fourth time, the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta recently received the Order of the Torch Award, recognizing it as the outstanding chapter of the nation.
Alpha Lambda Delta is a national society of college freshman with high academic achievement; The chapter has 130 new members who carry grade point averages of 3.5 or above, according to Dr. Martha Anderson, a recent winner of the Executive Director Award.
“It shows ULM is getting higher level students academically,” said Anderson. “I think recruitment and admissions is doing an excellent job of stressing how important involvement in university activities is. These students now realize there are other students who pursue the same academic excellence they pursue.”
Anderson commended the leadership of Laura Lacey Hales, former ALD President and current ALD senior advisor, as a large part of the reason for the fourth win.
“She’s just wonderful,” said Anderson. “She’s the kind of leader able to delegate to her entire officer group and keep them involved the entire year.”
Hales said the national organization judged the ULM chapter based on chapter involvement, programming, and chapter communication during the 2008-09 school term.
“Winning the Order of the Torch places us on the same level with our many competitors in the pursuit of excellence, such as University of Texas, Ohio State, Purdue University and UCLA," she said.
The national director will present the award to the ULM chapter later this year.
