ULM Child Development Center Director conducts state and national training
The director of the Child Development Center at the University of Louisiana at Monroe busily trained teachers at the state and national level in late January.
Emily Williamson presented an introduction to the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum for 115 teachers of the Nonpublic School Early Childhood Development Program in Baton Rouge on Jan. 26.
The program is a partnership between compliant non-public schools and Class "A" daycares. The collaborative effort seeks to provide high quality, developmentally appropriate preschool instruction and services to four-year-olds who are eligible for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
On Jan. 27 Williamson presented an introduction to the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum to 140 preschool teachers at the Louisiana Department of Education’s annual Preschool and Kindergarten Conference, also in Baton Rouge. Williamson served at coordinator of the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum rewrite team last year.
Williamson then traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to present a session titled, “Developing a Child's Portfolio: Where Do I Start?” at the 60th Annual Southern Early Childhood Association Conference on Jan. 30. Williamson also coordinated an event, “Just for Students” for approximately 200 university early childhood majors who participated in Math and Science Jeopardy while enjoying pizza.
ULM Family and Consumer Sciences Child Development majors Tafta Miller, Amanda McClendon and Melinda Dickens accompanied Williamson to the conference. The students are members of the Student Louisiana Early Childhood Association, a state affiliate of SECA, which awarded a travel grant for the students to attend the conference.
In addition to her duties as director of the Child Development Center, Williams is also an instructor in ULM’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
