ULM announces winners of Louisiana High School Technology Challenge

The Louisiana High School Technology Challenge, organized by ULM professor Mike Beutner, showcased the talents of 42 area high schools and 550 students. The results of the Feb. 18 competition, held entirely online, are listed below.

The Top 5 Louisiana High School Technology Team Winners include:

1st place: Welsh High School, Jefferson Davis Parish; Wendy Sonnier, team coach

2nd place: Westgate High School, Iberia Parish; Jean Thomassie, team coach

3rd place: Hahnville High School, St. Charles Parish; Annette Arcement, team coach

4th place: St. Joseph's Academy, East Baton Parish; John Richardson, team coach

5th place: Berwick High School, St. Mary Parish; Pam Daigle, team coach

A qualified team of judges at ULM examined and evaluated each team’s work. Beutner, associate professor of instructional technology, organized the innovative competition—the first of its kind in Louisiana—to instill a passion for teamwork, celebrate outstanding student achievement and attract more female and minority students to professional and technical careers in technology.

In the competition, students were rated on the following challenges: searching the Internet for reliable information, citing sources, and using grammatically correct sentences. Creative teamwork was required to complete several challenging tasks such as creating web sites, spreadsheets, flyers, newsletters, documents, animations, and designs. Participating teams used a working knowledge of software and the Internet—skills that are commonly used in the modern work place.
