Deadline to enter Region III Science Fair nears

While social events are great, University of Louisiana at Monroe science faculty would like to remind junior and senior high students that academic events can be just as fulfilling.

One such annual event is the Region III Science Fair, which offers an opportunity to compete in either single or group projects in one of 15 categories for cash prizes, certificates, iPods and more.

ULM will host the Fair from March 24-25, in Fant-Ewing Coliseum; the deadline to enter is March 9. Students are encouraged to visit with their science teacher about how to get involved, or simply go online at www.ulm.edu/sciencefair to get the “how-to” information.

Who knows? Some students might even progress to the National Science Fair or get a head start on college science skills!

All area middle school, junior high and high school math, science and computer science teachers are welcome to attend a science fair prep meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Feb. 13, in Room 101 of the Chemistry and Natural Sciences Building, on the ULM campus. (A map of the university is posted on the science fair website.)

Teachers should RSVP as soon as possible by calling 318-342-1790, or by e-mailing athompson@ulm.edu.

Teachers will receive a Science Fair packet with information for this year’s fair and various free goodies. Discussions will focus on how a school can host its own science fair, address project ideas within the various fields of science and how to get students ready for the Region III Fair. Light snacks will be provided.
