Ninth Annual Student Research Symposium scheduled for April 29

Students at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will showcase their work at the Ninth Annual Student Research Symposium Wednesday, April 29, in the University Conference Center, beginning at 7:30 a.m. ULM President James Cofer will present the awards at 4:30 p.m.

The research symposium displays outstanding research conducted by ULM undergraduate and graduate students. Prior to the symposium, students will conceptualize a research question, work with a faculty mentor to address the question, design a research method, identify the subjects, correctly and objectively collect data, analyze it, reach conclusions, and make recommendations.

The symposium provides a venue for students working alongside faculty to publicly display their efforts. “It is a great opportunity for students to learn research methodology. It is an equally great opportunity for faculty to mentor and pass the torch of research query to the next generation. The symposium encompasses what academe is all about,” said Tammy Parker, symposium chairperson and professor of economics.

Students may choose to present their research findings with a Presentation Poster or they can choose to create a Platform Presentation in which they verbally present their research to an audience. In both cases, the student researchers are expected to answer questions from judges who possess relevant credentials in the student's research field.

Mentoring is also a crucial part of the symposium. Students work through the research process with a skilled faculty mentor. Their research is then objectively evaluated by highly-qualified judges in their particular fields of study, which cultivates the research mindset of the students.

The research symposium began in 2001 with 84 student research presentations. Since then, participation has increased to over 500 participants each year.
