Brumfield named TRIO Achiever at 2009 LASAP Conference

University of Louisiana at Monroe Vice President for Student Affairs Wayne Brumfield was the TRIO Achiever for the 2009 Louisiana Association of Student Assistance Programs Conference, held this year in Shreveport April 2.

Brumfield delivered an address concerning TRIO’s impact on his accomplishments. He was nominated by Robert Carmouche, director of Special Services at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

This year’s theme was “LASAP: Transforming Today’s Dreams into Tomorrow’s Realities.” Brumfield pointed out that he is a living testament to the current conference’s motto. “As a first-generation college student, I understood the pressure to succeed in college, so I utilized the services at ULL when I was a student in the mid ‘70s.

“I worked as a residence hall counselor for the Upward Bound program at ULL for two summers and assisted first-generation college students with high school to college transition issues. I also had the good fortune to attend an engineering Upward Bound program at the University of Wisconsin at Madison during the summer of 1975. That program really gave me the confidence that I could attend college, and it challenged me to go back to my high school and take college prep courses that further prepared me for academic success in college.

“What you do for others is what really matters. Over the years, I have always tried to support TRIO programs on college campuses wherever I’ve worked because they clearly provide first-generation college students and their families defined pathways to college access, academic services and matriculation to a college degree.”

Brumfield was praised by LASAP representative Delores Haynes: “[His] achievements are phenomenal and deserving of recognition by TRIO families from across Louisiana and the nation.”

There are two TRIO Programs active at ULM: the Educational Talent Search, directed by Catherine Estis, and Upward Bound, directed by Virginia Eaton.

According to the U.S. Department of Education Web site, the Federal TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes six outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities, to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.

LASAP determines that there are over 50 TRIO Programs located throughout Louisiana. These various programs serve over 17,000 elementary, middle and high school students as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
