ULM math instructor recognized with statewide award
The Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics has named a ULM mathematics instructor the Outstanding College Math Teacher of 2008.
Kathie Smart was named the award recipient at the association’s annual meeting on Nov. 5. She teaches freshman-level mathematics as well as mathematics for elementary education majors at the university.
“I knew I was one of the finalists, but the award caught me completely by surprise,” said Smart.
In addition to teaching, Smart also conducts workshops for the Louisiana Systemic Initiatives Program, or LaSIP. The grant-funded educational initiative seeks to promote standards-based mathematics, science, and technology reforms in K-16 education.
Smart also conducts Math Science Partnership Workshops for teachers in the region. The Louisiana Department of Education established the workshops to improve classroom content and student achievement, using grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
She currently serves as membership chair for the Northeast Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics.
